Title: Release 8.1 and Interim Release 8.1.0 Informational Bulletin
What is Impacted: CWS/CMS Application
Describe Impact:

The application outage begins on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 6:00 AM, and will continue until Saturday, January 6, 2018 at approximately 2:00 PM.  Users will not be able to access the CWS/CMS application during this period.  All application updates will be applied beginning Saturday January 6, 2018 and should be available to counties as of Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM, January 6, 2018.  Customer support will be available from the IBM Helpdesk at (800) 428-8268. 

Coex County Users
Follow instructions provided by county IT staff.

Dedicated County Users
Before 01/06/18, dedicated county users should do both of the following:

  • Atleast one time in the week prior to Release 8.1 Implementation: 
    • Log out of Windows (via log off, restart or shut down). When logging back in during that time, the R8.1 cwscms.msi file will be copied to the workstation via the login script where it will await installation on 01/06/18.


  • As users leave the night before R8.1 implementation: 
    • Reboot the workstation (and do not log back into Windows), but leave the workstations powered on, so the installation can complete automatically over the weekend.

NOTE:  If these steps are not followed installation will take place the next time the workstation is powered on following the weekend, but users will need to avoid starting CWS/CMS while waiting and responding appropriately to prompts.  

Before Release 8.1 is installed, attempts to start CWS/CMS will fail, and while the corresponding error message is on-screen it actually prevents installation. Users should click OK on the message, and wait for the prompts. Alternatively, if the user will be away from their desk for an extended time, log off Windows but leave the workstation powered on, to allow automatic installation without prompting.

Remote users should plan to bring their workstations into the office on Monday 04/03 to complete their installation.  It is not necessary for remote users to bring their workstations into the office prior to the release weekend.

R8.1 information is located on the CWS/CMS website at the following locations:

  • All Other R8.1 Information:  CWS/CMS Homepage>County Info>County Logon>Code Release Secure Site>Interim Release 8.1.0

Since this is a major release, the CWS code tables will be refreshed.  As long as users are logging into the CWS Application regularly, this code table refresh will not impact counties.  This will impact newly imaged machines that will receive the newer code table.   Dedicated counties do not need to take any action.

The new code tables need to be replicated to county servers.  Counties should already have a process in place that updates county workstations from county servers.  These files are to be delivered to the workstations only if the code tables are newer than what the workstations already have.

Release 8.1.0 contains one (1) System Change Requests (SCR).

SCR 8663 –  Windows 10 (64-bit)/Office 2016 (32-bit) Migration (Warning Message Only)

As part of SCR 8663, the following message will start appearing on Windows 7 machines on March 5:

“Beginning with Release 8.2, CWS/CMS will not be supported on Windows 7.  Please update to 64-bit Windows 10 LTSB before April 21, 2018.”
